CITY OF KALAMAZOO
The design approach by architect Eckert / Wordell to the Community Stage in downtown Kalamazoo’s Bronson Park embraces the surrounding historic structures and sculptures while making an architectural statement for modern times.
Many of the influences of the park and vicinity are reflected in the design and construction. Limestone prevalent in surrounding buildings composes the acoustical walls. The roof form derives from arches of surrounding churches while roofing material matches the copper of the Civic Theater. The forms that compose the Bronson Park fountain are reflected in the tower that supports the roof while the bronze cast Rotary Club logo anchors the tower. The stage has become an active but not overwhelming participant in the park’s landscape.
The 1800 square foot stage was completed by Miller-Davis Company in 1999 through a General Contract with the Kalamazoo Rotary Club. The project won both AIA Michigan and AIA Southwest Michigan Honor Awards.
