Environmental Education Center

The Cedar Creek Institute is a major environmental education center located on a remote and pristine site near Hastings, Michigan. Its design results from a creative mix of innovative concepts involving inter-relationships between man, nature and technology, enhanced by the preservation of nature as a backdrop for the progressive programs and facilities offered.

Features include: Earth sheltered structures with sod roofs; Geothermal heating and cooling; Constructed wetlands; Use of construction materials produced from renewable resources (e.g. no old growth forest products); Water shed protection to preserve the Brewster Lake ecosystem; and Innovative construction techniques incorporating preservation and remediation concepts.

Designed by Slocum Associates, Kalamazoo, Michigan, the facility was constructed under the Construction Manager/Constructor form of agreement at a cost of $4.7 million.
