A groundbreaking ceremony for Traverse City Area Public Schools’ (TCAPS) new Montessori School was held on Thursday, April 15, 2021. Miller-Davis Company is serving as construction manager for the new $21.7 million school.

This new school will be the first public school in Michigan to be built specifically to honor a Montessori program. The Montessori method of education focuses on providing a communal and familial learning atmosphere where teachers and students collaborate on instruction. The new Montessori School will replace TCAPS Glenn Loomis, which is being used as a Montessori school, but was not constructed for that purpose.

The 84,000 square foot, two-story Montessori School will house between 500 and 550 students and serve toddlers through eighth graders. The new school will feature a pod classroom structure, science lab, art and Spanish room, a media center spanning two floors, a greenhouse, a full-size gymnasium and music rooms.

The new school is located on Franke Road in Traverse City and is expected to be open for learning in September of 2022.
