Job Responsibilities
Optimize Financial Operations
Our Corporate Controller takes the reins in oversight of month-end closings, guides cost accounting functions, oversees our annual audit, and prepares detailed financial forecasts that serve as the foundation for budgeting decisions based on data-driven insights. Other financial and tax-related duties include, among others:
• Supervise all cost accounting functions, including labor cost and job cost forecasting
• Identify and review issues potentially affecting project profitability directly with project management and project supervision to ensure understanding of the issues being reported as well as the actions to be taken to reduce
or eliminate significant forecast expenditures in excess of those estimated
• Collaborate with our team to ensure accounting procedures are uniformly applied
• Pinpoint appropriate solutions to monitor any facet of a job that is identified as providing a higher-than-normal risk of financial loss
• Oversee the use of Sage/Timberline construction software, including coordination of accounting and project management tools
• Manage compliance with all tax laws and regulations and tax examinations
Augment Organization Technology
A candidate suited for our Corporate Controller position is comfortable working closely with the Miller-Davis innovation team to identify, evaluate, and implement technology to enhance efficiency and profitability. You will help enhance company technologies by doing the following duties, among others:
• Guide and oversee the Company’s third-party managed IT services provider
• Manage the company’s physical IT needs including hardware and proper storage
Elevate Business Development Efforts
Our Corporate Controller has a seat at Miller-Davis’s Business Development table, supporting and contributing to our ongoing business development efforts. You will help elevate company business development efforts by performing the following duties, among others:
• Participate in local community activities, committees, or boards
• Provide supporting financial data relative to all business development efforts
Analyze Risk
A key role of our Corporate Controller is to review and provide written commentary on all construction contracts (whether for potential projects or projects in hand), including identification of significant contractual risk transfer issues and review and analysis of insurance and indemnification requirements, among others. You will analyze and manage risk by also performing the following duties, among others:
• Assist in managing all corporate insurance renewals (general liability, worker’s compensation, professional liability, and others) including response to pre-renewal underwriting requests, coordination with insurance agents/brokers and analysis of renewal options
• Assist and support in dispute resolution, including gathering and analyzing corporate-wide information and participating in strategy discussions as required throughout the dispute process
Enhance Employee Experience
Miller-Davis’ Corporate Controller works closely with our human resources to ensure a positive employee experience of benefit plans and proper handling of matters in accordance with those plans. You will enhance employee experience by performing the following duties, among others:
• Assist in performing all accounting and compliance functions, including preparation of tax and compliance filings
• Assist in managing all insured benefit plan renewals (group health, life and long-term disability) including response to pre-renewal underwriting requests, coordination with insurance agents/brokers, and analysis of renewal options
• Participate in annual benefit plan reviews with benefit attorneys and implement plan changes, including employee communications
• Assist in investigating and making recommendations for benefit plan design changes as issues develop or new opportunities emerge to provide enhanced benefits, reduced costs, etc.
Cultivate Relationships + Participate in Professional Development
All Miller-Davis staff assist in fostering and maintaining the relationships that have helped shape our business over the past 113 years. Our Corporate Controller participates in managing ongoing relationships with our bonding company, bank, insurance agents/brokers and attorneys. We also encourage the individual in our Corporate Controller position to participate in professional development activities that include, but are not limited to:
• Participate in AGC (Associated General Contractors) and CFMA (Construction Financial Managers Association) activities and committees as appropriate to keep current on industry developments and to support the construction industry
Education requirements, certifications, work experience
• Analytical, logical, competitive, levelheaded, dynamic, high achieving, and results-driven
• Bachelor’s Degree with Accounting major
• CPA with three to six years of experience, contractor client exposure is a plus
• Prior Controller experience desired
• Ability to manage confidential information discretely
• Understanding of construction and cost accounting
• An eagerness to identify improvements to accounting/reporting systems to drive profitability
• Communicate with and understand the needs of our users, including owners, architects, subcontractors, project managers, field superintendents and managers
• Entrepreneurial interests, including potential shareholder
