The University of Notre Dame's Hesburgh Library will undergo major renovations beginning in 2015. The project will be phased, to accommodate the on-going operations of the 14-story facility. The first phase includes 41,000 square feet of renovations to the first and second floor, creating a more open, collaborative area, as well as a new entrance on the north side of the building.
The Hesburgh Library, which celebrated its 50 year anniversary in 2013, serves, along with the Basilica and the Golden Dome, as one of the three pillars of the Notre Dame campus and is the academic heart of the University. The Library is also home to the famous Word of Life mural.
